The lady behind the holiday is a West Virginia housewife, and mother to 15 children, Marian McQuade. In 1970, she started a campaign to set aside a special day for grandparents. She had spread the news about this new observance. Five years and many letters and phone calls later, Grandparents Day became an official holiday.
