International Literacy Day started in 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It’s celebrated around the world each September 8. In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly gave world literacy a boost by proclaiming it International Literacy Year. This special year signified the ongoing commitment of the entire world to recognize and literacy for all.

International Literacy Day involves people of all ages and backgrounds all over the world. Special activities happening in different communities are planned to promote literacy (reading) and life-long learning. You may find events happening at your local community center, library or school.
