On December 26, 2004, the worst tsunami hit the coast of Africa. In total, over 200,000 people in more than 10 different countries lost their lives. It was the deadliest natural disaster in years.



A tsunami waves can travel for thousands of miles, but it’s usually only when they hit land that they become deadly.

You didn’t think we’d do all of the work for ya, did you? You’ll definitely have to do some legwork to make this science fair project complete. Here are some suggestions for what else you can do:

  • If you know someone who witnessed the 2004 tsunami firsthand, interview them.
  • Research the ancient city of Mahabalipuram, which was actually helped by the tsunami of 2004.
  • Find out what happened on the Indonesian island of Krakatau on August 26, 1883.
