Diary of a Wimpy Kid started as an online cartoon and Jeff Kinney’s hilariously painful stories were soon made into a popular series of illustrated novels like The Last Straw to name a few—a new book is due out in November. The movie does a great job of weaving Kinney’s drawings into the live action scenes—so the movie feels close to the original books.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is jam-packed with geeky heroes to keep you from giving up on middle school altogether (despite the fact that Greg considers it to be a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment of the cafeteria floor and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties that he must overcome to become popular). The pacing can get a bit slow and sometimes the gross-outs get too gross, but overall Diary of a Wimpy Kid is actually pretty wholesome! And if there’s a lesson to be learned it’s that the really cool kids don’t care what the other kids think.
