While reporting in the small town of Barrow, Alaska, Adam (John Krasinski) discovers a family of three whales trapped in the ice-covered waters. To breathe, they use their noses to constantly break open a small patch of water that is quickly turning to ice.

A local news report quickly turns national when Rachel (Drew Barrymore), an aggressive Green Peace activist, gets involved. She uses her platform to summon political action. They enlist the help of an American barge to break apart the ice, creating a path to open waters where the whales can migrate. But when the barge gets trapped in a large ice pothole, things take a turn for the worst.
