American Idol: Season 11, Week 13 :: 7 Finalists Compete 3811e

American Idol definitely favors oldies music, between weeks devoted to past decades and others devoted to industry legends. But this week, the Top 7 finalists put their modern foot forward by performing songs from 2010 to the present. Modern music should be a more important part of the show for two reasons: first, the majority of the audience is young and probably don’t recognize a lot of the oldies tracks, and second, the winner will be competing in today’s market. So shouldn’t they prove that they can keep up with the times?

The Performances 4jh3u

No one had a bad performance this week. Skylar Laine opened the show with a Rihanna, which wasn’t his best performance, but the judges seemed to like it. Jessica Sanchez sang a song that even their mentor Jimmy didn’t know well, but gave it her all. She showed ion and emotion and made the judges feel her performance.

Phillip Phillips tried to shake up his performance this week with something a little different (finally!). Even though it sounded great from home, the judges weren’t impressed. Joshua Ledet has a big voice and he’s never afraid to use it. He sang "Runaway Baby" and knocked it out of the park again.

Hollie Cavanagh sang Lady Gaga’s “You and I.”

Elimination 2zy4s

This week in a shocking turn of events, the contestants with the three best performances of the night wound up in the bottom three: Jessica, Joshua and Elise. Ultimately, Jessica received the fewest number of votes. But the judges were quick to dish out their one save of the season. It just goes to show that America may be playing favorites instead of voting for vocal talent.
