Experience the beginning of the iconic stealth series. 5m2r62

Oct 07, 2020

For a long time, the best way to play the Metal Gear games was by booting up a PS3. While that is still the best (and only) console you can plug in to experience the entire story from beginning to end, PC gamers now have a chance to see what the first few entries of the series have to offer thanks to a new release of Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (or Sons of Liberty). Oddly enough, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the best of the original MSX games is missing for now, as well as the rest of the games. Hopefully, the other games will make their way over eventually, but for now, let's take a look at these versions and see how they are different from the console releases.

The original Metal Gear came out back in 1987 and made the stealth game genre famous. Hideo Kojima’s saga started look no further than Metal Gear!

This game is when the series truly took off, especially outside of Japan. Metal Gear Solid is one of the most iconic PS1 games, and GOG’s PC version is based on the original PC port that came out in 2000. The port back in the day was not perfect and was virtually duct-taped together by its developers. This new version comes from that same port, but with some of its worst issues fixed. If you want to play MGS on PC in the best way possible, this fix and you’re ready to go! The characters, level design, and story are still gripping in 2020, and it is a game that everyone should play at least once. Solid Snake is tasked with taking on his former unit, FOXHOUND, and once again stop the colossal Metal Gear.

Sons of Liberty is where the series starts to get weird, in the best way. When MGS2 released in 2001, fans were widely critical of the change in the main character, since in this game you play as Raiden, a new character, instead of Snake. Still, the game is a fantastic adventure and one that will take you through incredibly detailed locations taking on even smarter enemies and crazier bosses. Some of the small details this game contains rarely can be found in today’s biggest titles. The gameplay only gets better each time you find new ways to tackle enemy encounters. Like MGS1, the best way to enjoy the game on GOG is with a patch installed. The GOG version also includes all 350 VR challenges to keep the game going even longer.
