- Family Matters was actually a spin-off of the popular '80s series Perfect Strangers. Harriette was an elevator operator in that series, and when it ended she was given her own show.
- Steve Urkel was only supposed to appear in one episode, but was so popular with viewers that he was brought on as a regular character.
- There was supposed to be a 10th season in which Laura and Steve get married but the show was cancelled in its ninth season.
- He most notably played Steve Urkel, but Jaleel White played more than seven characters over the course of the show.
