Greyhound racing was started in the 1800s in the United States, after the dogs were brought over from Europe to help American farmers control the jackrabbit population.
The 1900 Olympics in Paris included a pigeon shooting event. The birds were released in front of a participant and the winner was the competitor who shot down the most birds from the sky. The event turned out to be quite messy with dead or injured birds on the ground and blood and feathers all over the place. The event has since been dropped from the Olympics.
